Hello there! Firstly, we’d like to say thank you for coming to our little tavern and secondly, for taking the time to check out the rules. We hope this rule sheet will give you an idea about how things work in this RP chat and will keep things running smoothly.
The Setting: As you trail deeper into town, the buildings themselves seem to embrace you, drawing you further within itself. The streets of glistening cobblestone are barely graced by the light emitted from the windows high above. You follow the sound of laughter and faint music carried on the winds to your ear. The air smells of ale and meat roasting over a roaring fire.
Slipping through the shadow-laden allies, you find the source, the entity arousing your senses. A tavern of modest size lies before you, the light and life of it pulling you forward.
Before long the tavern’s aged steps are beneath your feet, creaking as you pass, a sign to your right, waving slowly in the breeze is marked: Harker’s Tavern in faded paint on weather worn wood.
As your hand reaches for the rusting iron door handle, you can hear the patrons just beyond. And with a slight effort, you pull the door open, dim fire light filtering out into the eve.
You enter.
Harker’s Tavern Rules/ Role Playing Guide
------------------------
General:
~ HT is generally a Fantasy based chat. Meaning the tavern itself is medieval in nature. So, there are a few limits on what could technically “exist” in this chat. Basically, no guns unless they’re say...classic hunting rifles or one shot pistols. Please, no machine guns or mega death lasers. Swords, daggers, axes, maces, hammers, crossbows, etc are all perfect.
Character wise, fantasy in itself is a broad genre and so many things apply. For example, your char could be a: human, dwarf, elf, halfing, gnome, shape-shifter, anthro, vampire, werewolf, demon, just to name a few. You could even have your own completely made up race. Generally speaking for the purpose of this RP chat...please no androids unless they’re clockwork haha, or anything extremely technology based. Think fantasy.
~ At the moment, for this chat, we don’t require you to have a pre-made character. If you do have one that fits this chat, by all means, use them. However, it’s perfectly fine to enter the chat and simply “freestyle” a brand new character on the spot. Just, try to keep within the boundaries previously stated.
If you would like to post a profile below, go right ahead. Though posting a profile isn’t mandatory, it’s highly encouraged. We’d love to see who our regular patrons are. The more detail the merrier.
~ Unless anyone else would like to apply for a barkeep job while they’re present in the tavern, our resident barkeep is Conor. Need a drink or something to eat? Simply ask Conor and he will gladly provide.
For example:
::she glanced across the bar, waving to Conor for assistance. After a moment he made his way over, asking what he could do for her this eve.:: (Basically you would act out Conor’s actions).
~ In the tavern, there is no penalty for simply coming in and reading the RP. Though we do highly encourage you to participate, it’s ok to be idle. You won’t be kicked out or banned. Though we do hope that the number of people RPing is greater then the number of people simply there to read.
~ When posting, try to keep your posts on the larger side. We encourage the idea that bigger is better. Get descriptive, really let your imagination flow. With this in mind, it’s alright if you have a few single line posts here and there but please, try not to make every post a single line or just a few words.
Note: If the short post is a continuation of a previous post, that’s fine. Even every so often a one liner of dialog is expectable.
~--------------~
Dialog:
~ The key to any good RP chat is dialog and actions. Here in HT there are a few ways to do this. You could simply type out your dialog without quotes or use quotes if you see fit. You can also mix actions in with your dialog.
For example:
Well, I don’t know about you...but I think it’s a bad idea.
“Well, I don’t know about you...but I think it’s a bad idea.”
Well, I don’t know about you ::He glanced about, shifting uneasily in his seat:: But I think it’s a bad idea.
Or, any combination of those.
~ If you wish to speak in OOC (Out of Character) please do so using (( )), [[ ]], or {{ }}.
For example:
(( Hello everyone! How are we all doing tonight?))
And please try to keep the OOC talking to a minimum. We’ve all come here to RP so try to keep in character. Any overuse of OOC and you will be warned, keep it up and you will be kicked from HT.
~ Please keep your dialog relatively clean, we understand that in the sense of characters...different people will naturally react to things in their own way. But keep it tasteful. If we see any use, or any over use for that matter of extremely vulgar words then you will warned, keep it up and you will be banned from HT.
~--------------~
Actions:
~As stated before, actions are a key part of the RP universe. So, try to be as detailed as possible, descriptions are what bring the world here to life. There are several ways to denote actions but here at Harker’s we strongly encourage the use of :: :: .
For example:
::With a gentle push upon the age beaten door, he entered. Taking a moment for his eyes to adjust to the dim lantern light and the haze of the room; he spotted an empty table towards the back of the tavern.::
If it happens that your post is longer then what will fit in the text box the fix to this is to add ... to the end of your post then ...to the beginning of your next post.
For example:
:: With a heavy sigh she slumped into the chair, which creaked lowly, seeming to sympathize with her. What a night, first her trek over the main-land was sluggish on account of foul weather, then there was that gopher hole that turned her...::
::...ankle. Now she couldn’t even afford the meager price of a flagon of ale. What else could go wrong?::
Alternatively, you could also do this:
:: With a heavy sigh she slumped into the chair, which creaked lowly, seeming to sympathize with her. What a night, first her trek over the main-land was sluggish on account of foul weather, then there was that gopher hole that turned her <c>
ankle. Now she couldn’t even afford the meager price of a flagon of ale. What else could go wrong?::
<c> = continue
~ If say, you wanted to target someone within your action post, say to give them the “hint” that you’re regarding them or that you’ve noticed them, you can include their chat name, inside <>, in your actions. This is a simpler way, though a less literary way to target someone.
For example:
::The sudden movement drew her eyes upward and away from her reverie. Trying not to be rude and stare, she carefully watched <Black_Rose> as the woman slipped through the patrons and took a seat at the opposite end of the bar.::

Conduct and Content:
~Here at Harker’s we’d like to make it an enjoyable environment for everyone. A place where people can come and RP, meet new people, take part in a storyline or two if they see fit, or just to hang out and enjoy the atmosphere. With this in mind, there are a few points that should be followed at all times. Failure to follow these rules will result in a warning and if continued, a kick or possible ban from HT.
Fighting: Though we understand that fighting and battles seem to go hand and hand in fantasy...we keep to the simple rule of reality. Simply, if you start a fight in a bar or pub, you’ll more then likely get kicked out. The same rule applies here. If you decide to fight with another char or chars....then take it somewhere else, preferably another room. If you fight at Harker’s you will be warned, if it continues you will get the boot. Hopefully at some point we will make a separate section...an “outside” you can go to if you should feel the need to fight or if your RP with someone else results in that.
This also applies to running in and killing everyone in the room. It won’t be tolerated and will more then likely be ignored by everyone in the chat, and you will get kicked out.
The same with coming in to kill a random character. Unless this is part of a SL (story line). You cannot enter the tavern and kill someone’s char without their consent. If this has to be done through a fight, then you have to leave the tavern. Keep in mind this is a place of business.
The use of magic in HT is fine, unless it’s used to cause destruction to the tavern or any of its patrons without their consent. Failure to follow this will result in a kick and if continued, you will be banned.
Ruining the Atmosphere: Simply put, if you’re being a nuisance and someone complains about you or we see you acting in a reckless or offensive manner you will be first warned then kicked. If you return and continue to misbehave then you will be banned. In other words...treat the patrons, tavern, and tavern staff as you would like to be treated. Granted we understand that chars can be evil, unfriendly, or just plain in a bad mood...the point is if you’re being overly offensive and someone either complains about you or we feel that your conduct is in question...you will be warned to tone it down.
This also includes coming into the tavern and spamming text, links, or comments unbefitting to the RP. If you come in and spam you will automatically (meaning without warning) be kicked from the tavern, come in again and do it and you will be banned.
Note: if you would like to link to your char picture or a webpage or anything regarding your character/characters, please post all links in your character profile/profiles at the bottom of this entry. We will make note on the chat page that character profiles can be found along with the rules and RP guide; that being here.

Profile Example:
Note: In the event that you want to create a profile to post here, this is a simple example of what you can use. Feel free to add any other details you wish. Also, you don’t have to submit a profile to be allowed to chat at HT, this is basically for anyone who wants to add a little flesh to their character/characters. Remember...the more detail, the better.
Name: Galstaff, Sorcerer of Light
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Appearance: (Here you can describe your character’s hair color, eye color, height, weight, preferred clothing, weapon of choice, personality, and any other little tidbits of description you can think of. If you want to break these into separate sections, feel free.)
Galstaff, though meek and unthreatening, takes his job very seriously. He lives by a strict rule of conduct and any variation on this will send him into a hissy-fit. Just try to debate him on spell components or his casting abilities and you’re in for it. With his dark hair, beady eyes, pale pasty skin, and pension for whining; at first glance one wouldn’t see a man of might and magic, but a boy with too much time on his hands. Though hesitant, Galstaff is true and honest; a prime example of what happens when one stays in the root cellar for too long. Moreover, even though his intentions might seem a bit peculiar, his heart is in the right place.
History: (What makes your char tick? This section can be as long or as short as you’d like it to be.) Little is known about this young lad’s history. He has trained in the fine arts of magic casting, though perhaps it is mostly self-taught. Therefore his abilities have been known to be fresh and often times, sloppy. It is said, that if backed into a corner, Galstaff has been known to cast a catastrophically bad spell known only as: Magic Missiles.
Personal Quote: (Optional section, but awesome if you have something.)
“I’m attacking the darkness!”
